Our Mission
and Vision

At the Amy Gillett Foundation (AGF), we passionately believe that every cyclist deserves to ride safely, and every motorist should share roads respectfully. Our commitment is unwavering, driven by powerful data, community collaboration, and impactful advocacy.

Our Mission

"For there to be a relationship of mutual respect between motorists and cyclists and to ensure cyclist safety through the use of law, technology and physical infrastructure."

Our mission shapes every initiative we pursue. We collaborate actively with policymakers, law enforcement agencies, research institutions, and community groups to create tangible, lasting change. From advocating nationally recognised laws like 'A Metre Matters' to promoting innovations in road safety technology, our efforts are evidence-based and results-driven.

Our Vision

"Zero deaths and serious injuries of cyclists."

We envision an Australia where cycling is not just enjoyable, but unequivocally safe for everyone. Our vision is ambitious—yet achievable. We strive daily towards making cyclist fatalities and severe injuries a part of history, rather than today's reality.

Our Philosophy

We are anti-harm, neither pro-cyclist nor anti-motorist. Our approach is inclusive, focusing equally on commuters, families, recreational cyclists, and road cyclists—anyone who shares the road. We acknowledge that road trauma profoundly impacts not just cyclists and their families, but also drivers who may have made tragic mistakes. Through empathy and shared accountability, we aim to shift behaviours, foster understanding, and nurture respect among all road users.

Why Our Mission Matters

In 2023 alone, over 8,500 Australian cyclists suffered injuries due to collisions with motor vehicles, and tragically, 46 lost their lives. These statistics underscore the urgency and importance of our work. Each number represents a life changed forever—a stark reminder of the need for continued advocacy, education, and investment in cycling safety.

Achieving Our Vision

To make our vision a reality, we are:

Advocating for safer roads:

Championing policies such as mandatory passing distance laws ('A Metre Matters'), enhanced vehicle safety standards, and better cycling infrastructure.

Leading educational initiatives:

Equipping motorists and cyclists alike with the knowledge and understanding required for safer shared roads.

Driving innovation through research:

Collaborating with experts in engineering, technology, and behavioural sciences to create data-informed solutions.

Building community awareness:

Using powerful, emotional storytelling campaigns like 'Our Stories' and compelling data-driven initiatives such as 'The Tragic Facts'.
